One day, 11 year old Unna feels a stab of pain in her chest - she senses that her beloved Grandpa is in danger. Unna calls her grandfather, who has had a case of illness, and saves his life. At the hospital Unna's grandfather reveals that Unna has shaman blood in her veins and that the gift to heal has been passed on to her. Unna is the only person Grandpa can turn to for help. Grandpa tells Unna where to find the shaman's book and magic drum. When it's beaten three times, the drum will move its owner to another time and place, and so begins Unna's adventure in the Finnish Stone Age.

Unna ja Nuuk
Coming to Real Art Ways in Hartford, Connecticut on August 16th & 17th at 1.30pm: the Finnish film Unna ja Nuuk, which I simply have to see! Not only for the Finnish angle, but it overlaps with so much that I am writing now that I can hardly believe it. It's been making the rounds of various festivals since its release. Here's the description from the RAW eNews:

Ohmygod! No shit! That's really eerie.
I *swear*, I have *not* been sending your chapters to a film producer.
LOL -- I know. There will always be a certain similarity between shamanic narratives. How deep is the Finnish gene structure though, eh? Ancient magic is still the best!
Oooh, I wish I could see this one!
It's possible -- it seems to be making the rounds across the world, so maybe it will come out west, too. Of course, I'm hoping there will be a DVD soon!
Hi Kate,
Drop me a line and let me know which screening you'll see. If I'm not in Chicago, it would be nice to catch up!

Hi Meghan --
I'm leaning toward Saturday because I figure there will be less traffic coming back afterward than on Sunday.
Hope you'll be around!
And THEN I do some searching and I've found a DVD of the film! Does this mean I won't go to RAW? Hmmm -- not sure. But I can't wait to see the film!
If you go to RAW on the 16th, I'll meet you!
I'm still tempted -- the DVD arrived today (and does have English subtitles, LOL -- I forgot to even check) and the film looks gorgeous. It would be terrific to see it on a bigger screen and with friends.
