Impossible not to do so; though our guide on the "behind the scenes" tour was at pains to demonstrate that servants at the Biltmore had much better conditions than theverage service folk of the time. True enough; I've paid for hotel rooms far less spacious and picturesque than the maids' rooms. On the other hand, I didn't have to change the linen, wash and iron it by hand and suffer the whims of the well-to-do. But the gardens were lovely and it was not absolutely deadly heat and humidity-wise the first (long) day we spent there.

It's pretty. As with all such buildings, however, I tend to think of whose backs it was built upon.
