BitchBuzz: Subverting the Bite

My latest column for BitchBuzz explores the way young fans have hijacked the overt message of abstinence in Stephanie Meyer's vampire series Twilight. Just goes to show you can't control the passion of young girls (not completely anyway...). Oh and how much the boys resent Comic-Con being taken over by girls. Hee hee hee!

Waiting for BB to email me my permission to post my own note, thus:

Dr. Girlfriend, meet Bloodbag Swain.

And clumsy writing does seem to sell very well indeed, when it, be it by Stephen King or Anne Rice or Stepahnie Meyer of Dan Brown, hits the right buttons.

An old best female friend of mine treasures the novels, and a similar extent the films, since they appeal to her notion that chaste love is somehow more pure than sexually satisfied love. Glad that other women and girls are choosing to take less self-defeating messages from the works.

I wonder if it's just a matter of writing that asks absolutely nothing beyond mere comprehension with a fast-moving plot with recognizable (even stock) characters. If I could bottle it...

I'm glad to see some females are getting past the ridiculous notion of "purity" encouraged by outmoded models of patriarchal control, but there are still a lot of holdouts in this Puritan nation. Unfortunately.
