I think you'll find a lot to like. I am always amazed that Lester made such a good film in A Hard Day's Night when he could have got away with something less ambitious. I even love the Musketeer movies and they're a bit sprawling (and not just for Ollie).C. Lester's visuals are so delightful.

Todd -- anticipating some of my future TOFs! Yeah, I think the awkwardness is a failure of nerve. Lester seems to find it easier to focus on the small targets: George's accidental audition for the teen show is hilarious. While much of that is due to the terrific script and Harrison's brilliant deadpan, the nimble direction really ties it all together. Even with a looser script, Help! works often because of the visual fun, though too often we're kept at too much of a distance.

And yes, totally likely about John and Yoko.C. (And one wonders how much if any the white room in the film didn't appeal to Ono and Lennon...)

Yes, it does sound as if it isn't too sure what to make of sexual politics...Lester often seems to me, as in THE BED-SITTING ROOM and HOW I WON THE WAR, a bit uncomfortable with nuance, at least when dealing with Very Large Matters, as opposed to the petty hypocrisies the Beatles encounter throughout NIGHT.Todd Masonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01815516018079824802noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8944798.post-15851722437764820562011-01-25T10:24:51.520-05:002011-01-25T10:24:51.520-05:00Oh, yes -- thanks for reminding me! The soundtrack...Oh, yes -- thanks for reminding me! The soundtrack is quite wonderful. It's such an odd thing that I can't figure out how much is just Lester's attempt to be satirical -- done more successfully in How I Won the War -- and how much just part of the times. It starts out seeming like a wacky, cheer for the underdog kind of film, but it's hard to tell what he wants us to get from it.C.
